Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 28, 2026
The short version. Vocabulary has no account, no ads and no tracking. Your learning is stored on your device, and in your own iCloud or Google backup if you use one. The app does not ask for your name, email address or location, and we do not sell or share personal information.
Who we are
Vocabulary is published by Mustafa Berkay Mutlu, Jerusalemer Straße 43, 10117 Berlin, Germany. For the processing described here, Mustafa Berkay Mutlu is the controller under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Privacy questions can go to privacy@laughter.app. Our legal notice is at Legal notice (Impressum). Website privacy.
What stays on your device
The app keeps the things you create while you learn on your device. This includes:
- words and lists you save or favorite, and any custom words you add
- your practice and review history, streaks and progress
- your reminder settings and preferences
- your choice for the "Help improve the app" setting
- word reports you write (see below)
The app does not ask you to create an account, and we do not run an account system for it.
Sync and backup
Your platform may keep a copy of your learning data so you can get it back on a new device.
- iPhone and iPad: the app can sync through your own iCloud account, in the private storage that Apple provides to you. We cannot see it.
- Android: the app takes part in Android backup, which stores a copy in your Google account if you have backup turned on.
Whether these run is controlled by your device and account settings. They are handled by Apple and Google under their own terms and privacy policies.
Content downloads
The dictionary is built into the app. Illustrations and pronunciation audio are downloaded over a secure (HTTPS) connection from our content delivery provider, Cloudflare, when you need them, and kept on your device for a while so they load faster next time. Like any web server, its servers can see the technical details that come with every request, such as your IP address and which file was asked for. The app does not send your learning data, words or reports to that provider. We do not keep server logs ourselves. Cloudflare processes this request data on our behalf under its own data processing terms, and it may do so outside the European Union with the safeguards the GDPR requires.
Microphone and speech
Speaking practice listens only after you start it and allow microphone access (and, on iPhone and iPad, speech recognition). Recognition runs on your device. The app does not save recordings of your voice. You can turn the permissions off at any time in your device settings, and the rest of the app keeps working.
Notifications
If you turn on reminders, the app schedules notifications on your device. Reminders are local: they are scheduled on your device and are not sent from our server. You can change or stop them in the app or in your device settings.
Sharing
When you share a word card, the app makes a temporary image of the card, adds a link to the word, and hands both to your system share sheet. You choose where they go. The link points to a page on the web, so anyone who opens it visits that page. If you choose to save the image, the app only adds to your photos and does not read them.
"Help improve the app" setting
The app has a setting called "Help improve the app". Your choice is saved on your device. Today the app does not send usage or crash information anywhere, whatever the setting says. If that ever changes, we will update this page first, and nothing will be sent unless the setting is on.
Word reports
If you report a problem with a word, the report is saved on your device. It is not sent to us. To reach us, use the contact details on the Support page.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address and what you send. We use it only to reply to you, and we keep it for up to 12 months after your last message.
Legal basis
We deliver illustrations and audio because you ask the app for them, and keeping that delivery working and secure is our legitimate interest (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). When you email us, we process your message to answer you (Article 6(1)(b) when it concerns your use of the app, otherwise Article 6(1)(f)). Your learning data stays on your device and in your own platform account, so we do not process it.
Children
Vocabulary has no accounts and no ads, and it does not ask anyone, including children, for personal information.
Your choices
- Allow or deny microphone, speech recognition and notification access in your device settings.
- Because we do not hold your learning data, requests about it are handled on your device or in your platform account. For anything else, email us.
- Turn iCloud sync or Android backup on or off in your device settings.
- Deleting the app removes the learning data stored on your device. Copies kept in iCloud or an Android backup follow your platform's own settings, and you manage those there.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask us for access to the personal information we hold about you, and to correct, delete or restrict it, to receive it in a portable form, and you can object to processing based on legitimate interest. Email privacy@laughter.app. You can also complain to a data protection supervisory authority, for example the one where you live or the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (Berliner Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit).
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update this page and its date. If a change affects how your information is handled, we will make it clear in the app too.
